At the launch of the Thunderbird 500, an online auto magazine's correspondent raised a question on the development of the diesel powered engines. The CEO of Royal Enfield Dr Venki Padmanabhan took no time in saying that Royal Enfield is “not” developing any diesel engined motorcycle.
This actually comes as a shock to the hard core Bulleteers who were waiting to see a next generation of 'Taurus'. For those who haven't heard about it, Royal Enfield Taurus is a 340cc single-cylinder diesel engined motorcycle. These engines were noisy and unrefined and not very popular because of lower performance and higher weight penalties.
The engines were originally designed for use in commercial applications such as electric generators and water pumps which produced about 6.5 Bhp-16 Nm. The USP of these motorcycles was it's fuel economy, which stands at 64-68 Kmpl. However, tight emission norms killed it once and for all.
Coming back to our topic, it seems highly unlikely that a diesel engined motorcycle will come reality in India any time too soon.
