    Royal Enfield launches next-generation Thunderbird 500CC

    Royal Enfield has launched its Thunderbird 500, which, it says, would enhance the pleasure of leisure motorcycling.

    With an overall black theme, the Thunderbird 500 comes in three distinct shades - Stone, understated matte finish and rugged texture capturing the effortless strength of the legend; Flicker, blackest of blacks which stays pure forever and is a fitting tribute to the rider's spirit; and Twilight, an inspired blue-black finish that stands for the rider who stays steady under the changing skies.

    "We hope that with Thunderbird 500, our customers will see affirmation of the fact that Royal Enfield is a company bent on listening, imagining and delivering," said Venki Padmanabhan, CEO, Royal Enfield.

    The new Thunderbird is priced at Rs 1,82,571 (on road Mumbai)
    The company is also working towards making the service experience much better. The new bikes would be serviced using newer technology. Trained mechanics will be appointed.

    ROYAL ENFIELD THUNDERBIRD 500 TO BE LAUNCHED IN INDIA ON THE 11TH OF OCTOBER 2012

    Royal Enfield will launch the much awaited Thunderbird 500 on the 11th of October in India. The 500cc version of the Thunderbird was first unveiled at the 2012 Auto Expo. It has been a long time coming but due to production constraints, the Chennai based motorcycle maker had to postpone the launch. The Thunderbird 500 will be the flagship motorcycle in Royal Enfield’s range and is expected to be pricier than every other Royal Enfield motorcycle in India.

    Royal Enfield Thunderbird 500 sports front and rear disc brakes. The front has 280 mm disc and the rear has 240 mm disc. The Thunderbird 500 also receives much needed projector head lights with LED. The head light is a 55 watt unit. As far as engine goes, it has the Classic 500′s 499cc, twin-spark, air-cooled, single-cylinder engine which belts out 27.2 BHP of peak power at 5250 RPM and 41.3 Nm of peak torque at 4000 RPM.

    Royal Enfield has also given the Thunderbird 500 an all new instrument cluster with a digital readout for odometer, trip meter and fuel meter. The Thunderbird 500 will be available in three shades of black – midnight black, artic winter black and matte black metallic. Although prices are yet to be announced, one can safely expect the Thunderbird 500 to be the costliest vehicle in the company’s line-up, with our estimates pointing to a Rs. 1.75 lakh price tag. Dealers are now accepting bookings for the higher capacity Thunderbird.

    The Thunderbird 500 features:

    * Projector headlamps

    * Oval section swing arm

    * Rear wheel disc brake

    * Twin trip meters

    * Bungee mounts

    * High capacity fuel tank for touring

    * LED tail lamp

    Uncamouflaged 2012 Royal Enfield Thunderbird 500 caught testing in Chennai

    Very soon, Royal Enfield will launch a brand new motorcycle, that will sit at the top of the model line up, in the form of the Thunderbird 500. A test mule of the Thunderbird 500 sans camouflage was spotted at Chennai. Dealer sources in the know indicate that the Thunderbird 500 will go on sale very soon, with the launch impending in the next few weeks. The 2012 Thunderbird 500 will feature the four stroke 500cc twin spark, air cooled engine that outputs a peak power of 27.2 Bhp at 5,250 rpm and a peak torque of 41.3 Nm at 4,000 rpm.

    The single cylinder, long stroke engine’s prodigious torque is the biggest talking point. The fuel injected unit construction engine operates through hydraulic tappets, which greatly reduce maintenance, unlike on the older Royal Enfields. The engine is mated to a five speed manual gearbox and gets a black powder coated finish. First showcased at the 2012 Indian Auto Expo, the Thunderbird 500 comes with a range of new features, never been seen before on Royal Enfields. The motorcycle is positioned as a lifestyle cruiser and is expected to be the priciest in Royal Enfield’s range due to the many new features.

    Royal Enfield Thunderbird 500 Price, Features and Specifications

    The Thunderbird 500 has been perhaps one of the most anticipated offering from the Royal Enfield stable considering that the Thunderbird 350 has been doing yeoman service for the last ten years. The Thunderbird has built for itself a reputation of being a comfortable touring motorcycle and is often the first choice amongst the Royal Enfield models for touring enthusiasts. The Thunderbird has earned itself the reputation of a capable highway tourer and established itself firmly in the cruiser market. The Thunderbird broke away from the mould of Royal Enfield’s traditional motorcycles and redefined a new lineup. In that direction, the new Thunderbird has come as fresh motorcycle.

    Styling:

    The ‘black’ engine is one of the first styling elements that catch your attention the moment you see the motorcycle. The seat has been completely redesigned to suit the new foot pegs position. The handle bar too has received changes for better reach and ergonomics.The high rise handlebars, forward placed foot-pegs and a low seat height enable a rider to cover distances comfortably for longer periods of time. Other small styling elements that a keen enthusiast will notice are the Royal Enfield logo on the all new foot-pegs, new design mirrors.

    Seats :

    The seat now opens using a lock mechanism, accessible through the side panel. True to its design concept as a more touring friendly motorcycle, the separately mounted pillion seat can be removed to accommodate luggage. The pillion grab rail is an all new pressure die cast component and lends to the modern design of the motorcycle. Bungee hooks provide the much needed bungee points to tie luggage.

    Instrument cluster :

    The new front end lends itself nicely to the muscular stance of the bike. The instrumentation also includes two digital trip meters, allowing riders to keep a track of total trip mileage as well as intermediate mileage between tankfuls. The speed and engine rpm are shown via tastefully designed analogue clocks, housed in all new twin pods at the front. The main ignition lock also functions as a central steering lock. The inclusion of hazard lamps in the switch gear is a first for a motorcycle manufactured in India. The tank cap is placed asymmetrically on the top right hand side of the tank, instead of the conventional central mounting; a distinctive styling element of the Thunderbird 500.

    Engine :

    It now comes loaded with a 500cc Unit Construction Engine (UCE) and additional power makes covering distance an easier task. The seamless torque delivery will keep the rider entertained through the twisty sections. A flick of the right wrist is all it takes now to overtake a slower moving vehicle or climb up a twisty section. When it was time to build a Thunderbird 500, Royal Enfield decided that it had to offer more than what customers were used to seeing from the Thunderbird in its current guise. Apart from the larger engine, the bike now features 41mm thick forks in front and an oval section swingarm at the rear to allow the rider to handle the additional power. The inclusion of a rear disc brake will now allow the rider to confidently explore the upper limits of the motorcycle’s performance capabilities.

    Fuel tank :

    Since Royal Enfield's are mainly associated with tour and leisure purpose and to tackle this issue Thunderbird 500 comes equipped with a massive 20-litre fuel tank for an enhanced range.

    Ergonomics :

    The designs are now oriented to the cruiser character of the motorcycle. The seat has been completely redesigned to suit the new foot pegs position. The handle bar too has received changes for better reach and ergonomics.

    Headlight and Tail light :

    Night time visibility has been the biggest challenge faced by most motorcyclists while cruising on the highway hence the new headlight with a 55w projector lamp for its low beam and a 55W halogen bulb for the high beam addresses that issue. The lighting is at its brightest with the high beam on, working in combination with the projector lamp giving ample spread and penetration on the road. Tail lamp comes with LED lamp with position light guides which is new for Royal enfield family.

    Brakes:

    The bike comes loaded with front 280mm Disc, 2-Piston caliper brakes. Stopping power has been aided with the addition of a disc brake at the rear. The braking system is supplied by Bybre, a fully owned subsidiary of Brembo. It is mounted on the new improved oval section swing arm. These changes will enhance the riding experience of the motorcycle on the highway.

    Price :

    The price of the Thunderbird 500cc is expected to be ten thousand higher than the Classic Chrome which makes the bike the flagship motorcycle of Royal Enfield’s portfolio.

    Royal Enfield unveils the Thunderbird 500 at the 11th Auto Expo 2012

    Royal Enfield, the Chennai-based manufacturer of motorcycles that exude an old world charm, has just launched the new Thunderbird 500 today at the Auto Expo here in Delhi as reported by our undercover reporter few days back.

    Launching the Thunderbird 500 at the 2012 Auto Expo, Mr Siddhartha Lal, MD & CEO Eicher Motors Ltd. said, “When we launched Thunderbird in 2002, it was a one-of-its kind model on the Indian roads that redefined the cruiser segment. Today, with the launch of the Thunderbird 500, fitted with the UCE and a host of design enhancements, Royal Enfield has again upped the ante in leisure motorcycling which we have been pioneering for over half a century in India. With touring enthusiasts forming the core of our customer base, the Thunderbird 500 gives them more power, comfort and style for long-distance riding.”

    The Thunderbird’s ‘black’ engine is the first of several new styling elements on the bike. It gets a redesigned seat, new lock mechanism accessible through the side panel and true to its touring-friendly nature, it gets a separately mounted pillion seat that can be removed to accommodate luggage. The handle bar has been changed to improve the bikes ergonomics, the pillion grab rail is also new and the bike also gets bungee points to tie luggage. All the new foot pegs, new design mirrors and the LED tail lamp now have the Royal Enfield logo embossed on them.

    The headlights are really important on our roads and more so for the touring folk. Royal Enfield has endowed the Thunderbird 500 with a new headlight that incorporates a 55W projector lamp for the low beam and for the high beam, it works in conjunction with a 55W halogen.

    The 500 also gets two digital trip meters to keep a track of total trip mileage and intermediate mileage. It comes with a 20-litre fuel tank and it also gets hazard lamps in the switch gear, which is a first for a motorcycle manufactured in India. Rear disk brakes mounted on the new oval section swing arm, supplied by Bybre, add to the stopping power of the bike.

    Enfield also showcased the Cafe Racer which is almost in final production form and will go on sale next year.  Apart from the bikes on display, the Enfield stall includes biker apparel and riding accessories as well.

    Our sources have confirmed that the all new royal enfield 500cc thunderbird will be displayed at Auto Expo 2012 in Delhi, Largest Automotive show in India, the date should be 5th January. The 500cc Thunderbird  was about to launched here within this year end,  but due to overbooking of Classic 500 we will probably have to wait 6 more months, that is, we may have a chance  to get delivered the Twinspark Thunderbird 500cc at the end of 1st quarter, April.

    Royal Enfield, forerunners in the manufacture of  motorbikes is all set to launch their 500 cc variant of its Thunderbird cruiser bike with a UCE engine.

    After speaking to Royal Enfield dealers in the DELHI NCR (National Capital Region) we found that a 500 cc UCE (Unit Construction Engine) with EFI (Electronic fuel injection) could find its way into the Thunderbird’s frame. Dealers from the NCR stated on condition of anonymity that a new Thunderbird may be launched soon and that it will likely sport the Classic’s 500cc UCE engine with EFI.

    UCE powered Royal Enfield are in huge demand today. Bullet lovers are increasing day by day and so is the demand for UCE. But as always, Royal Enfield has manufacturing constraints, because of which it is not able to meet customer demands. UCE are not only more powerful but are also very reliable and economical than their compatriots. Gone are the days when a Royal Enfield motorcycle was considered as a bike which is
    high on maintenance.

    Royal Enfield launched the India-specific Classic 500 UCE fuel-injected model in 2009 without an O2 sensor(Lambda sensor). May be to keep the cost of motorcycle low since bike’s price is already above Rs. 1.30 lakh. But many people believe that the lack of an O2 sensor in the fuel-injected system caused issues. On the other hand , the UK and US-specific Classic 500 models are sold equipped with O2 sensors and
    there have been no issues with the fuel-injected systems on those models. With the Thunderbird 500 UCE hopefully, these issues along with fuel injection glitches will be solved by Royal Enfield.

    The bike will likely be priced in the Rs.1.30-1.45 lakh range in order to ensure its price does not clash with their flagship model Classic 500.

    The present Thunderbird 350 twin-spark is priced at roughly Rs.1.12 lakh while the Classic 500 comes at a price of Rs. 1.46 lakh. The Classic 500 is powered by a 4-stroke, air- cooled, single cylinder, OHC, SI engine with fuel injection. The 499 cc engine produces 27.2 bhp of maximum power at 5,250 rpm and 41.3 Nm of maximum torque at 4,000 rpm.

    There are no official confirmations about the bikes launch yet. But according to some Royal Enfield dealers the launch in India is expected soon and all Motorcycle lovers have something to look forward to in the near future. Going by the history of Royal Enfield, this all new 500cc Thunderbird is definitely going to take the bike enthusiasts by storm.
