Royal Enfield launches 'Continental GT' at Rs 2.05 lakh

Royal Enfield has finally launched the highly anticipated Continental GT in India with an on-road price of Rs 2.05 lakh on-road Delhi and Rs 2.14 lakh on-road Mumbai. The Continental GT is the same bike that Royal Enfield had displayed at the Auto Expo 2012 by the name of CafĂ© Racer. Now, cafĂ© racing, as a culture, evolved during the 1960s in the UK and involved motorcycle enthusiasts (the Rockers—a biker subculture) using stripped down, customised motorcycles to race between transport cafĂ©s. These sporty, souped-up motorcycles gave birth to the cafĂ© racer genre. Low-set handlebars and rear-set footpegs—lending to a crouched down riding posture—were the hallmarks of these cafĂ© racers. They were also very simple machines that could be customised easily to make them more responsive and quicker.

CafĂ© racers of the 1960s and Royal Enfield’s own 1965 Continental GT—the first mass produced cafĂ© racer of its time—have been the main design inspiration for the current Continental GT. This bike has a stretched out low-profile fuel tank with knee recesses for the authentic period cafĂ© racer look. Then, it has a flat sculpted racing seat with contrast stitching and bump stop along with rear-set foldable footrests. There are trimmed front and rear mudguards that add to the clean lines of the Continental GT. It also has an upswept exhaust that allows more ground clearance, especially required when you are cornering at speed. Royal Enfield has worked closely with Xenophya Design of the UK in order to ensure that the Continental GT doesn’t miss out on design details.

The new RE flagship will be sold in two colours, red and yellow only. Powering the Continental GT will be a single cylinder air cooled 535cc engine delivering 29PS of power and 44Nm of peak torque and will come mated to a five-speed gearbox. RE has developed the chassis in collaboration with UK based Harris performance. The front suspension has 41mm telescopic forks while the rear has Paioli twin gas-charged shock absorbers. The bike is shod with Pirelli Sport Demon tyres and brembo brakes.

The Continental GT is manufactured at the company’s plant in Oragadam near Chennai. The company is expanding its manufacturing capacity to 2.5 lakh units by 2014.

      Royal Enfield Bullet 500 Launched

Royal Enfield, has launched its popular motorcycle Bullet with a new 500cc engine, in a new shade, called Forest Green along with some updates.

In terms of design, the Bullet 500 retains all the basic design elements of a true-blue Bullet but gets additions like new pillion grab-rail with a cushion end, all new pilot lamps which Royal Enfield calls “Tiger Lamps” and old-school-inspired classic tail lamps. The new bike also gets the Royal Enfield Winged badge which has been finished in a gold and silver livery to complete the vintage look of the bike. For better stability and a meaty stance, the bikes gets 19-inch rims up front which are shod with 280mm disc brakes.

Powering the beast is the same 499cc mill as found on the Classic 500 though Royal Enfield has dropped fuel-injection from it (as rumoured earlier). The four-stroke, twinspark, air-cooled engine pumps out 26.4PS @ 5,100rpm and torque of 40.9Nm @ 3,800rpm. Power is transmitted via a five-speed gearbox and the bike gets electric starter as standard. Royal Enfield has dropped the fuel-injection because a lot of traditional Bullet followers felt it was comparatively unreliable and also the engine didn’t feel the same in contrast to the carburetted version. Royal Enfield haven’t revealed prices yet but it is speculated to be priced lesser than the fuel-injected 500.

The latest offering from Royal Enfield came as a surprise for many Bullet lovers as they were expecting company's much-anticipated Cafe Racer. However the new bike too does not disappoint its loyal customers.

Royal Enfield, a name which is celebrated for its Bullets, will offer the brand new bike in a new green colour and is expected to roll out the Bullet in coming months. There is no information available regarding the pricing of the new Bullet.

Initially, the new model Bullet will be available only in the major markets of Royal Enfield like Punjab and Kerala.

The much-awaited bike Cafe Racer, which is powered by a 535cc engine, is reportedly gearing for launch by the end of this year. It is expected to generate more power and torque than the company's Thunderbird and Classic. The company is yet to reveal the pricing of this model for India. As per earlier rumours, the model is likely to fall in the bracket of ₹2 lakhs.

ROYAL ENFIELD THUNDERBIRD 350 GETS A FACELIFT

Eicher motors the company Royal Enfield also launched the refreshed Thunderbird 350 with all the same features of the Thunderbird 500. However, the Thunderbird 350 will be placed below the newly launched Thunderbird 500. By doing this Royal Enfield has expanded the Thunderbird’s range of new features to suit the budgets of a wider range of buyers.

The Thunderbird 350 as its name suggests, it will feature the same smaller UCE engine displacing 346cc. This engine produces 19.8 Bhp and 28 Nm. Like its elder sibling, the 350cc engine too features hydraulic tappets, an electric starter and a five speed manual gearbox.

However, the Thunderbird 350 uses a carburetor instead of fuel injection, allowing Royal Enfield to price it much more competitively. Also its fuel efficiency is also expected to be much higher than the 500cc model.

The older 350cc Thunderbird bookings have been stopped and the newer version is available now. Bookings for both the new Thunderbird 350 as well as the 500 models are now open at Royal Enfield dealerships across the country. The all new Thunderbird 350 is priced at Rs. 1,43,000 (on-road, Mumbai).

As the booking for old 350cc Thunderbird has been freezed, the left over stock of the  Thunderbird TwinSpark can be bought for heavy discounts/no waiting periods. So folks who can live without the new added features can definitely go with older model as the engine of the new Thunderbird 350 remains unchanged from the current TwinSpark model.

Royal Enfield launches next-generation Thunderbird 500CC

Royal Enfield has launched its Thunderbird 500, which, it says, would enhance the pleasure of leisure motorcycling.

With an overall black theme, the Thunderbird 500 comes in three distinct shades - Stone, understated matte finish and rugged texture capturing the effortless strength of the legend; Flicker, blackest of blacks which stays pure forever and is a fitting tribute to the rider's spirit; and Twilight, an inspired blue-black finish that stands for the rider who stays steady under the changing skies.

"We hope that with Thunderbird 500, our customers will see affirmation of the fact that Royal Enfield is a company bent on listening, imagining and delivering," said Venki Padmanabhan, CEO, Royal Enfield.

The new Thunderbird is priced at Rs 1,82,571 (on road Mumbai)
The company is also working towards making the service experience much better. The new bikes would be serviced using newer technology. Trained mechanics will be appointed.

Royal Enfield unveils the Thunderbird 500 at the 11th Auto Expo 2012

Royal Enfield, the Chennai-based manufacturer of motorcycles that exude an old world charm, has just launched the new Thunderbird 500 today at the Auto Expo here in Delhi as reported by our undercover reporter few days back.

Launching the Thunderbird 500 at the 2012 Auto Expo, Mr Siddhartha Lal, MD & CEO Eicher Motors Ltd. said, “When we launched Thunderbird in 2002, it was a one-of-its kind model on the Indian roads that redefined the cruiser segment. Today, with the launch of the Thunderbird 500, fitted with the UCE and a host of design enhancements, Royal Enfield has again upped the ante in leisure motorcycling which we have been pioneering for over half a century in India. With touring enthusiasts forming the core of our customer base, the Thunderbird 500 gives them more power, comfort and style for long-distance riding.”

The Thunderbird’s ‘black’ engine is the first of several new styling elements on the bike. It gets a redesigned seat, new lock mechanism accessible through the side panel and true to its touring-friendly nature, it gets a separately mounted pillion seat that can be removed to accommodate luggage. The handle bar has been changed to improve the bikes ergonomics, the pillion grab rail is also new and the bike also gets bungee points to tie luggage. All the new foot pegs, new design mirrors and the LED tail lamp now have the Royal Enfield logo embossed on them.

The headlights are really important on our roads and more so for the touring folk. Royal Enfield has endowed the Thunderbird 500 with a new headlight that incorporates a 55W projector lamp for the low beam and for the high beam, it works in conjunction with a 55W halogen.

The 500 also gets two digital trip meters to keep a track of total trip mileage and intermediate mileage. It comes with a 20-litre fuel tank and it also gets hazard lamps in the switch gear, which is a first for a motorcycle manufactured in India. Rear disk brakes mounted on the new oval section swing arm, supplied by Bybre, add to the stopping power of the bike.

Enfield also showcased the Cafe Racer which is almost in final production form and will go on sale next year.  Apart from the bikes on display, the Enfield stall includes biker apparel and riding accessories as well.

Royal Enfield launches the new Desert Storm and Classic Chrome

Royal Enfield, a unit of Eicher Motors Ltd, today announced the launch of two leisure bikes. The bikes, Classic Chrome and Desert Storm, being limited edition products, would be available at select brand stores and dealerships across the country.

The Classic Chrome will be priced at Rs. 1, 50,659 (Ex-showroom Mumbai) while the Desert Storm will cost Rs. 1, 43,967 (Ex-showroom Mumbai) while the on road prices will be Rs. 1,65,400 and Rs. 1,58,200 respectively."When we launched the Classic in November 2009, we had not imagined in our wildest dreams that this new product would occupy almost 40 per cent of our total sales within a year of its launch. During this time we have feverishly engaged ourselves in burnishing this gem. The fruits of this labour are now manifested in the Classic Chrome and Desert Storm," Royal Enfield CEO Venkatesh Padmanabhan told reporters here.
The Classic Chrome gets a fuel tank finished in chrome, wider mudguards and an oval tool box. That said, the 500 cc twin-spark engine puts out 27.2 bhp of maximum power and 41.3 Nm of torque. The Chrome also sports a leather finished seat which adds to the retro British bike feel.

The Desert Storm is finished in “sand” paint scheme and is sort of a tribute to our soldiers who have protected the honor of our nation, serving for the country in the harshest of environments. The major difference between the two bikes is the unique paint job each one of them sports.

The two new Classic 500 versions carry the same single spring saddle seat and look identical to the old classic except for their colour scheme. The ECU of the new bikes has also been revamped for smoother power delivery. Among other notable changes are the wheel sizes of the bikes that will now be 19-inch in the front while the rear maintains its 18-inch rim, but now sports a slightly wider profile of 120/80-18 in place of the previous 110/90-18. Also, the front wheel mount on the fork tube has been changed on both the bikes to accommodate the new larger front wheel.

"Following the launch of Classic 350 & 500cc in September 2009, we have been continuously equipping our dealerships to take customer satisfaction to the next level. In 2011, we have added 15 dealerships and one brand store to our existing network," he said."Our customers have been demanding the `Chrome' model for quite some time now. Both Classic Chrome and Desert Storm are meant to bring more thrills to the customer," said Royal Enfield Senior Vice President, Sales & Marketing, Shaji Koshy. With its manufacturing base in Chennai, the company offers a variety of models catering to the needs of the traditional segments, the enthusiasts, the leisure bikers and the urban youth.

Royal Enfield to launch Classic Chrome and Desert Storm tomorrow on 29th September 2011

Royal Enfield is a day away from the launch of the Classic Chrome and the Desert Storm variants. The Royal Enfield Classic Chrome 500 and Desert Storm 500 are variants of their Classic line. Dr. Venki Padmanabhan CEO, Royal Enfield and Mr. Shaji Koshy, Sr VP- Sales & Marketing for Royal Enfield will preside over the launch event on 29th September 2011.  The variants will of course have a new paint job, and in regards to technical specifications, variations would be minimal.

The royal Enfield Classic Chrome 500 and the Desert Storm 500 are merely variants of the Classic line of Royal Enfield, which means that apart from the new paint jobs that these motorcycles sport, the rest of the motorcycle, including the mechanicals is bog similar to the Royal Enfield Classic 500. So, what you get in the Classic Chrome 500 and the Desert Storm 500 is a couple of new paint jobs.

Royal Enfield Confirms Classic Chrome 500

Indian Bike manufacturer Royal enfield has confirmed that it would be launching a new motorcycle , the Classic Chrome 500 in India soon. The company has not declared the exact date on which the Classic Chrome 500 will be launched.

The Classic Chrome 500 is a stylised version of the available Classic 500. The new bike was first unveiled at the 2010Auto Expo and Indian motorists were waiting with bated breath for the Chrome 500 to reach the market. The Chrome 500 has already been launched in Europe and the USA.

The Classic Chrome 500 from Royal Enfield as the name suggest gets loads of chrome on its body. The fuel tank, air box, front mud guard as well as the rear mud guard are all finished in chrome. The chrome finish will definitely add to the looks of the bike. While the export version are equipped with 18-inch wheels, the Indian version will get 19-inch wheels for better stability at high speeds.

The technical specifications of the new version will be the same as the current Classic, with a 499cc engine producing the power of 27.2 horses and 41.3Nm of torque.

Though the bike may not undergo any major changes a few minor changes will be seen. The overall length of the new Classic Chrome will see an increase of 30mm over the former variant numbering to 2160mm. Unlike the old Classic which had 19” tyres in the front the new Chrome will see 18” tyres both in the front as well as the rear. In the rear, the 120/80 18” rubber will be replaced by 110/80 profiled 18” tyres.

Other minor changes would include one millimeter reduction in the rear drum brake with a 152mm drum in the new variant as opposed to the 153mm in the old Classic and a one litre increase in the fuel tank capacity.

Royal Enfield gets into branded riding gear, and we like it!

On first glance, the range of riding gear by Royal Enfield might look at an attempt to ape Harley Davidson, but going by the sheer functionality that some stuff that Royal Enfield seems to bring to the table, we’re inclined to think otherwise. The iconic then-British now-Indian motorcycling lifestyle brand, Royal Enfield is at the cusp of launching a range of riding gear focused on everyday usability and functionality. This latest initiative from Royal Enfield promises quite a lot as the riding gear and accessories can be tested under trying conditions as Royal Enfield has a factory backed, one-of-it’s-kind hard core touring initiative.

For instance, the riding boots that Royal Enfield will begin selling later in the year are not steel tipped to ensure that wearing these shoes while traveling in security intensive locations like airports doesn’t become a hassle. So, nice attention to detail that. Along with the riding gear, Royal Enfield will also launch a range of accessories like helmets, luggage racks, key chains and even pannier boxes for use on the range of Royal Enfield motorcycles.

While the exact details of the gear that Royal Enfield plans to launch in what appears like a phased manner across it’s Brand Stores in India remain sketchy at the moment, we hope that Royal Enfield prices the RE branded gear affordably as doing otherwise could result in the gear remaining put on showroom shelves like the overpriced leather saddlebags and the large acrylic windshield that Royal Enfield sold as accessories for the AVL engined Royal Enfield Bullet Machismo 350/500.

Also, many after market vendors sell plenty of Royal Enfield branded accessories in the market and it would be interesting to see whether Royal Enfield initiates any legal action against them for usage of the Royal Enfield logo. Plenty of Bulleteers will also prefer Royal Enfield accessories sold directly by the motorcycling firm rather than after market vendors if the quality and price are up to the expectations. For starters, the Royal Enfield Rain Gear with reflective piping is priced at an affordable INR 2,299. So, it looks quite promising indeed.

Royal Enfield testing a Machismo with a 500cc UCE Engine

For the export market, Royal Enfield already makes the Royal Enfield Classic Chrome UCE500, which isn’t too different than the erstwhile Royal Enfield Machismo with the 500cc unit construction engine. Our sources tell us that Royal Enfield has been testing the Royal Enfield Machismo 500 with the UCE engine with remapped fuel injection and that an Indian relaunch for the Machismo is likely in the coming times.

If this indeed happens, Royal Enfield enthusiasts have reasons to celebrate as the Royal Enfield Machismo, with it’s generously chromed styling is one motorcycle that really has the maximum street presence when it comes to Royal Enfields. Royal Enfield has refrained from launching variants based on the 500cc UCE engine for the Indian market due to production constraints, caused primarily due to the massive demand that the UCE engined Bullets have generated in recent times.

The reason for this demand is quite understandable as the Unit Construction Engines that Royal Enfield has developed in association with Engines Engineering of Italy bring tremendous improvements in both reliability, power and fuel economy. These factors allied to a strong marketing campaign by Royal Enfield has made the Bullet popular with young Indian motorcyclists, who previously avoided the Royal Enfield brand due to the high maintenance and low relaibility associated with Royal Enfield motorcycles.

Coming back to the Machismo UCE500, the motorcycle could give Royal Enfield enthusiasts who plan to use their Bullets for touring a shot in the arm as the Classic 500 UCE isn’t exactly a tourer due to it’s slightly cramped ergonomics and seat design which makes it more of a city clicking motorcycle than a true blue tourer. Also, Royal Enfield has struggled to get the chassis balance right with the initial crop of Classic 500s due to the new tyre sizes, which reportedly was causing high speed handling issues.

With the Machismo 500 UCE hopefully, these issues along with fuel injection glitches will be solved by Royal Enfield. With that, a credible alternate to the likes of the Honda CBR250R could emerge for those looking for a long stroke single with relaxed power delivery and vintage styling at the same price point of that of the recently launched CBR250R. What remains to be seen is how exactly Royal Enfield manages it’s delivery times which, at the current 8 months for the Classic 500 UCE is simply ridiculous for this day and age where instant gratification is the name of the game.
